Nanotechnologies and Nanoelectronics to cure the brain
Michele Giugliano, professor of Neurobiology at SISSA, Luca Selmi, professor of Electronics at the University of Modena and Reggio, and Pierpaolo Palestri, professor of Electronics at the University of Udine, will present the state of the art and the opportunities for the future of an increasingly promising field of research: nanotechnologies, i.e. devices and manipulations at the atomic and molecular scale, to repair the brain. Nano-devices, such as brain pacemakers, can act directly on nerve cells, impacting directly on the mechanisms underlying the nervous system; that means that will represent, in a not too distant future, a treatment for diseases such as Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy.
The meeting is addressed at lay people, to make everybody aware of new non-pharmacological frontiers for the treatment of widespread diseases; but it is also dedicated to young people, to show them new opportunities of study and career.

The event is organized by an international consortium of academic and research institutions, which received in 2020 a substantial funding from the European Commission to conduct cutting-edge research and innovation to design new nanotechnologies for the treatment of brain diseases.
The event includes two short seminars, “Repairing the brain: the brain pacemakers” and “Nanoelectronics and Nanotechnologies: the IN-FET project”.
