Antarctic penguins: surviving in the harshest continent

Antarctic animals have evolved over millions of years, developing adaptations that allow them to survive the harshest climate on Earth. These include penguins, particularly subject to habitat alterations and changes in the ecosystem, which can reduce their chances of survival.
The Adélie penguin populations will be at the focus of the conference that will take place on 25 September from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm at Magazzino delle Idee, within the cycle of conferences related to the exhibition Xtreme: living in extreme environments.

The Antarctic penguins represent one of the best examples of adaptation to extreme environments and play a key role in the ecosystems they inhabit. Not only are they predators, but they also participate in biogeochemical processes, transporting and making available again important nutrients from the marine ecosystem to the terrestrial one.
Dr. Silvia Olmastroni, researcher at the University of Siena will speak. The conference will be moderated by Prof. Ester Colizza (University of Trieste), director of the Trieste branch of the National Antarctic Museum “Felice Ippolito”.
