From Space to Earth: The Astronaut’s Kitchen

On October 7th, 2020, from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm, the Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste will host the conference From Space th Earth: The Astronaut’s Kitchen, inspired by the  Xtreme: Vivere negli ambienti estremi exhibition (open to until 11th October 2020 at Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste).

The conference will be held by Stefano Polato, well-known chef who dealt with the food of the astronauts, his mission is to combine cuisine and science.

Space research has profound and positive effects on the life of the inhabitants of the Earth. Among them there are those that derive from the study of astronauts’ nutrition. The interaction between humans and food is a complex relationship, actually it is a communication in which correct information has to be introduced. It is easy to understand how important is food for a person embarking on a long-lasting space mission in order to support survival and high performances in a difficult and highly stressful environment such as space.

This conference offers a journey to see the evolution of space food from Gagarin to today. We will learn what were the initial purposes, what are the current needs and used technologies. During the conference we will also understand what are the rules to follow in the production of astronauts’ meals, many of which are very useful even for those who live on the Earth.

The event, organized with support from INAF / Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste and in partnership with Museo Nazionale Antartide and Federazione Speleologica Regionale FVG, is part of the cycle of conferences related to Xtreme: Vivere negli ambienti estremi.
