XTREME: Life in Extreme Environments

Speleology, Astrobiology, Antarctica: three apparently distant worlds connected by the extraordinary resiliance of life in extreme conditions. A special exhibition on the features of these environments, on how our species can adapt and explore them, and how life can thrive even in these hostile habitats.

The search for lifeforms that can survive in extreme conditions is one of the key aspects of research in biology, astrobiology and space exploration.

From astronaut training in the caves of Sardinia and Slovenia, to survival technologies spinning out from antartic research to space exploration. And then plans for underground space colonies on Mars or on the Moon, the search of organisms living in extreme environments on Earth and the discovery of all the biomass living deep underground. These are some of the exhibition’s main themes, which will delve into the surprising connections between these three worlds and their practical and theoretical implications.

This exhibition is organised by Federazione Speleologica Regionale del Friuli Venezia Giulia, Museo Nazionale dell’Antartide Felice Ippolito e INAF – Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste.
