Grotta Gigante

Scientific research in Grotta Gigante

How is research performed underground? And what is being studied in the largest underground chamber in the world? During the guided visit to the Grotta Gigante near Trieste, researchers and experts of this fascinating environment will describe the instrumentation located therein and will illustrate the most recent discoveries made in this famous cavity, more than 100 meters underground.

Among the covered topics, the researchers will talk about the detection of water flows that take place hundreds of meters below the cave floor and the remote observation of the floods caused by heavy meteorological precipitation, capable of raising the bottom of the cave by a few millimeters and generating potential environmental risks. These floods are also a danger for people exploring deep karst cavities and a possible source of pollution of karst water resources.

The Grotta Gigante, located in the Karst region just outside Trieste, holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest show cave, and houses the highest horizontal pendulum in the world. The visit will be followed by refreshments in the cave museum.
